Sneak Peek: Katy Perry - "Dressin' Up" (Full Original Demo Version)

After nearly two years of promotion and tireless performing, it appears Katy Perry is finally ready to bring down the curtain on her record-breaking sophomore album Teenage Dream, signing off with the release of a deluxe edition, on March 26, called The Complete Confection. The reissue of the 2010 album, which has sold nearly six million copies worldwide, will boast a few bonus features along with its $14.99 price tag: these include the chart-booster versions of  "Last Friday Night (TGIF)," "E.T." and "The One That Got Away" (featuring Missy Elliott, Kanye West, and a guitar, respectively) as well as a trio of new tracks, one of which, "Part of Me," has already scaled the singles chart to become the sixth track on the upcoming release to have hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Also previously unheard are "Wide Awake" and "Dressin' Up," the latter of which was written and recorded during the original Teenage Dream sessions along with "Part of Me" but ultimately left off the final track list. A few blogs have apparently posted "snippets" of "Dressin' Up," which reminded me that for some reason I happen to have what I'm guessing is a full demo recording from the original sessions. While the final cut will undoubtedly be more polished if not entirely re-recorded (perhaps even re-written. Who knows?), the demo is interesting and amusing enough on its own that it couldn't hurt to put it up while we wait. I'm pretty sure Perry is waist-deep in the initial stages of creating her third studio album, so I doubt she'll mind. As for that third record, she's suggested it might be more in the "UR So Gay"/"Circle the Drain" indie-rock-ish Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie Vans Warped Tour My December vein than its pop hit factory predecessor, and given her recent divorce, the increasing proximity of her 30th birthday (she's 27, but still) and the contractually mandated separation from Dr. Luke (thank you EMI merger), I can see it. It could be pretty awesome.

I used to have trouble swallowing Katy Perry's sexuality, for reasons I now can honestly barely recall (this helped me come around). So when I first heard "Dressin' Up," a year and a half or so ago, I was a little put off by it - the way one is when Ashlee Simpson sings about wanting to fuck you wearing a French maid's uniform. Now, it doesn't strike me as awkward or insincere and it's therefore much easier fluff to swallow (look! A mixed metaphor! I'm Jessie J!). The line "you wanna pet my kitty?" also has much less shock value in a post- "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde South" world, not to mention "Somebody point me to the best ass-eater." The best thing about the song by far, though, then and now, is the lyric, "Ooh, my Cookie Monster wants a taste test."

I dare you to disagree.
